<image:title>About - Mikki Stelder (they/them) is an antidisciplinary researcher and writer whose work traverses oceans, anticolonial struggles, and queer transfeminist thought and praxis. Their work examines the relationship between Dutch maritime imagination and imperialist expansion, and how water holds potential for crafting radical and liberatory futures. It is situated at the intersection of critical ocean studies, Black and Indigenous studies, and anticolonial critique. They are an Assistant Professor of Global Arts and Politics at the University of Amsterdam. Mikki’s work has appeared in Postcolonial Studies, Angelaki: journal for the theoretical humanities, Settler Colonial Studies, Radical History Review, The Journal of Palestine Studies, Feral Feminisms, Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies and the edited collections Global Trajectories of Queerness: Same Sex Politics in the Global South (eds. Ashley Tellis and Sruti Bala, co-authored with Haneen Maikey), The Future of the Dutch Colonial Past (Amsterdam University Press), and Law and Humanities in a Pandemic (London University Press). They have also written op-eds for Mondoweiss (co-author Ramzy Kumsieh), OneWorld.org, Trouw, and Pinkwatching Israel. They have (co-)curated and participated in numerous public programs and exhibitions including Mo ving Together: Art, Education and Activism - a Week with Angela Y. Davis (curator), Oceans as Archives (curator), Sonic Acts Biennal (speaker), Unimaginable: Clarion Calls from the Rising Sea (artist), Rietveld Studium Generale (speaker), Surinamensium Part I (artist), Queeristan: Autonomous Queer Festival for Arts and Politics (organizer).</image:title>

<image:caption>This weeklong series of events brought together artists, activists, scholars, public institutions and grassroots groups. Together with Angela Y. Davis and Gina Dent the project explored social justice, artistic and scholarly praxis, intergenerational activism and the responsibility of public institutions. The program included performances, workshops, public lectures, a special Amsterdam Black Heritage Tour, and much more. The aim was to generate and contribute to broad-based societal conversations on the interrelations of art, activism and education in the pursuit of social justice, decolonization and liberation. <image:title>Dissertation - Queering Occupation</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the past decade, I have collaborated with Palestinian anticolonial-queer activist groups alQaws: for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestinian Society and Pinkwatching Israel. These collaborations have been in the form of research projects, articles, talks, and organizing transnational activist conversations on Palestine liberation and the role of queer politics. My dissertation project emerged from questions and challenges that arose from these collaborations. For my dissertation I developed a methodology of writing with Palestinian anticolonial-queer critique to explore the limits and possibilities of academic labor in relation to anticolonial struggle. My dissertation was inspired by the ways in which Palestinian anticolonial-queer critiques continue to be sidelined and/or instrumentalized by activism and scholarship in European and North American contexts; by hegemonic narratives of Palestinian liberation; and by Israel’s colonial pinkwashing strategy. I was awarded my PhD (cum laude) by the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis. My dissertation was shortlisted for the NWSA/UIP First Book Award at the National Women’s Studies Association Conference in 2019. While writing my dissertation, I lived and worked in Palestine for several months working for alQaws. During the PhD, I was a visiting scholar at the Department of Communication Studies at Concordia University and later at the History of Consciousness Department at UC Santa Cruz. Parts of the dissertation have been published in Settler Colonial Studies, Radical History Review, The Journal of Palestine Studies, Global Trajectories of Queerness: Same Sex Politics in the Global South (eds. Ashley Tellis and Sruti Bala, co-authored with Haneen Maikey) and Feral Feminisms. I also contributed op-eds to Mondoweiss (co-author Ramzy Kumsieh), OneWorld.org, and Pinkwatching Israel. <image:title>Surinamensium Part 1 - Untitled (2022) by Mikki Stelder</image:title>
<image:caption>This work is part of an ongoing collaboration initiated by artist and curator Sithabile Mlotshwa, and with Rudy Chotoe aka di Damsko. It was included in Sithabile Mlotshwa’s exhibition 6 - 15 July 2022 at Arti et Amicitiae (Rokin 1121012 LB Amsterdam) Surinamensium Part 1 – Rethinking the gaze of Maria Sibylla Merian/Naturalist, Scientific illustrator and Adventurer The exhibition Surinamensium part 1 is the starting point and reflection on the gaze of Maria Sibylla Merian, a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator whom in 1699, traveled to Dutch Suriname to study and record the tropical insects native to the region, when it was a plantation colony utilising slavery for sugar cultivation. In 1705, she published Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium. Merian’s Metamorphosis has been credited with influencing a range of naturalist illustrators. Because of her careful observations and documentation of the metamorphosis of the butterfly, Merian is considered to be among the more significant contributors to the field of entomology by David Attenborough. Part 1 consists of a presentation of dialogues and reflections with contributions from by Mikki and Rudy Chotoe aka di Damsko.
